All the Other Mothers Hate Me by Sarah Harman (4th Estate Books)

This stylish, satirical thriller revolves around an American woman who suspects that her beloved son might be involved in the missing of a wealthy student at his prestigious West London private school.

Florence Grimes, a 31-year-old former singer, has always opted for the path of least resistance. Single, financially strained, and disillusioned after the ignominious end of her girl band career, her only motivation comes from her 10-year-old son, Dylan. However, when Dylan becomes the prime suspect in the mysterious disappearance of Alfie Risby – his bully and the heir to a vast frozen food empire – during a school trip, Florence finds herself faced with an unprecedented challenge. She must locate Alfie and vindicate her son, or risk losing Dylan forever.

Florence's predicament is exacerbated by her lack of any discernible skills, let alone investigatory prowess, and the disdain she garners from other school mothers. Moreover, Florence harbors a gnawing doubt about Dylan's innocence, complicating her quest for the truth. This tension between her maternal instincts and the unsettling evidence she encounters adds a profound layer of complexity to her character.

The novel's characters are vividly drawn, especially Florence, who remains a party girl at heart yet fiercely protective of her son. Her juxtaposition with her perfect, responsible sister and the judgmental school mothers accentuates Florence's sense of isolation. Despite their disdain, these women are acutely aware of the threat Florence poses to their domestic stability, given their husbands' fascination with her.

The narrative unfolds along multiple threads, revealing a tapestry of crimes that extend beyond the initial mystery. Scams, murders, and eco-terrorism are intricately woven into the plot, with Florence and Dylan at the epicenter of this chaotic storm. The multiplicity of criminal elements enhances the story's intrigue and complexity, keeping readers on their toes.

Although the novel occasionally meanders into chatty dialogues that can feel superfluous, it compensates with its humor, engaging atmosphere, and relentless action.

The story is a hilarious and twisted exploration of failure and the arduous journey of starting anew when reality falls short of dreams.

It offers a compelling and pleasurable read, balancing dark themes with a light-hearted tone.
