One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware (Scout Press)
In "One Perfect Couple," Ruth Ware crafts a high-stakes, cerebral thriller that delves deep into the psyches of five couples ensnared on a storm-ravaged island, where a malevolent presence lurks among them.
Lyla, a post-doctoral researcher, finds herself at a crossroads. Her academic pursuits have hit a dead end, her job security is tenuous, and her relationship with Nico, a struggling actor, is fraught with uncertainty. When Nico seizes the chance to participate in a new reality TV show, "The Perfect Couple,"
Lyla reluctantly agrees to audition alongside him. After a whirlwind selection process, Lyla and Nico find themselves embarking on a journey through the Indian Ocean, en route to the secluded island, where they will compete against four other couples—Bayer and Angel, Dan and Santana, Joel and Romi, Conor and Zana—for a substantial cash prize.
However, the island's idyllic facade quickly crumbles. The inaugural challenge leaves the contestants shaken and on edge, and an ensuing overnight storm exacerbates the situation. Isolated by vast stretches of ocean, stripped of their phones, and cut off from the outside world, the group must coalesce to endure the mounting threats. As resources dwindle and tensions escalate, Lyla realizes that the game show’s veneer conceals a perilous reality—their survival hinges on navigating a deadly game where the ultimate stakes are life and death.
The novel focuses on the survival of the contestants on a remote island after a reality TV show turns into a life-or-death situation and highlights the tension and distrust that develops among the contestants as they navigate the challenges of the show and the storm. This is particularly evident in the way the characters' true intentions and motivations are gradually revealed.
The novel explores the complexities of relationships, particularly through the characters of Lyla and Nico. Their decision to participate in the reality TV show is a compromise, and the story delves into the consequences of such choices.
The book critiques the nature of reality TV and how it can manipulate and distort reality.
The characters have to work together to try and survive, but tensions, distrust, and betrayals emerge as the situation becomes more dire. This tests the relationships between the couples. With no way to call for help, the characters must rely on their own wits and resourcefulness to try and escape the island or stay alive until rescue arrives. This heightens the sense of isolation and desperation.
The threat of a killer on the island adds an extra layer of danger and suspense, as the characters don't know who they can trust. This complicates their efforts to work together for survival.
The reader is left to ponder the moral implications of the character's choices and the devastating consequences of their actions.
The book did not leave a big impression on me, as I have read quite a few with a similar theme. In any case, it is quite cinematic and attractive due to the rapid development of events.
