The Figurine by Victoria Hislop (Kindle Edition)

The Figurine by Victoria Hislop is a historical novel that takes place in Greece during the 20th century. It focuses on the protagonist, Helena, and her journey of self-discovery and exploration of her family history. Helena, a British girl with mixed Greek and Scottish heritage, embarks on a quest to uncover her roots and becomes captivated by the world of archaeology and ancient artifacts.

At the core of the plot lies the Cycladic figurine, a mysterious representation of the female form, which becomes entangled in the dangerous underworld of illegal smuggling and cultural desecration. The novel delves into the intricate relationship between the past and present and delves into themes of ownership versus appropriation.

Upon inheriting her grandparents' apartment in Athens, Helena stumbles upon a collection of valuable objects and antiquities, leading her to question her grandfather's involvement in their acquisition. Her growing fascination with archaeology sparked during a summer spent on an Aegean island with fellow volunteers, intertwines with her desire to understand her heritage. As she grapples with her grandfather's actions, Helena contemplates the meaning of "home" concerning looted antiquities and her own identity. Through the intergenerational connection between Helena and her grandparents, the novel explores the profound impact of historical events on individual lives and emphasizes the significance of preserving cultural heritage.

While I found it challenging to form a strong connection with the characters, particularly Helena whom I found to be somewhat naive at times, I appreciated Hislop's exquisite descriptions of Greece, which vividly brought the setting to life.

It must be noted that the novel unfolds at a slower pace, demanding patience and an appreciation for its historically rich details and references to real-life events and figures. Loss, grief, love, betrayal, and intergenerational trauma and guilt are overarching themes woven throughout the narrative. Moreover, the novel effectively highlights the enduring impact of historical events on individuals and underscores the vital importance of safeguarding cultural heritage.

Victoria Hislop's writing style is profoundly descriptive and captivating. She possesses the remarkable ability to breathe life into the past and skillfully portrays Greece's tumultuous history.
