While I found it challenging to form a strong connection with the characters, particularly Helena whom I found to be somewhat naive at times, I appreciated Hislop's exquisite descriptions of Greece, which vividly brought the setting to life. 

It must be noted that the novel unfolds at a slower pace, demanding patience and an appreciation for its historically rich details and references to real-life events and figures. Loss, grief, love, betrayal, and intergenerational trauma and guilt are overarching themes woven throughout the narrative. Moreover, the novel effectively highlights the enduring impact of historical events on individuals and underscores the vital importance of safeguarding cultural heritage.

Victoria Hislop's writing style is profoundly descriptive and captivating. She possesses the remarkable ability to breathe life into the past and skillfully portrays Greece's tumultuous history.
