A Place Called Freedom by Ken Follett (Ballantine Books)

18th century Scotland. Life is hard, brutal and extremely dangerous for coal miners. Men, women, children, they all work there, actually from young age till the death. And their lord doesn't hesitate to punish them, because they are his property, merely things for him. Slaves.

Young Mack McAsh wishes to escape, his only allies are his twin sister and highborn Lizzie Hallim. After the tragedy, he finds himself first in London and afterwards in America. Mack's life is deeply intertwined with Lizzie's, they both tries to find a place called freedom and start to live their lives as they wish.

A richly colored, fast paced plot, full of history, tension and action. Protagonists are passionate for something better, and even the toughest challenges can't stop them.

Ken Follett is superb storyteller and his books are always a treat to read.

Highly recommended.
