The Housemaid by Sarah A. Denzil (ARC provided by Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op)

Young woman with turbulent past starts to work as a maid in a vast Highwood Hall. The Howard family seems to be charming, Mrs. Huxley, the housekeeper, creepy and hostile and all the house full of secrets. Nevertheless she is adamant to establish fresh beginning for herself. She also wants to find out what happened to her mother who worked in Highwood Hall years ago and vanished without the trace.

Something sinister is clearly on a horizon, when she gets a diorama with a murder scene. And the victim? Obviously the maid.

People are not what they seem to be. Danger lurks around every corner.

The novel is dark, intricate and full of secrets. The maid stays nameless almost till the end, servants are still ghosts for upper classes, even in a modern Britain/world.

Beside all the twists, turns and mistery, the plot offers clear insight in a modern society and human psyche.

Excellent and gripping read.
