The Shadow Man by Helen Fields (Avon Books UK)

Profiler Connie and detective Baarda investigate a kidnapping of a wealthy woman in Edinburgh. There are another kidnapped victims and it seems the cases are connected.

Connie has some interesting researching methods and her relation to Baarda is effective. The story is very dark, the perpetrator is obviously very sick man, with tortured soul and he only wants to have a proper family. The lives of the ones he'd chosen are his oxygen. 

Gripping and scary story.
